How to Connect to an RDP Server from Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone
After an RDP service is activated, you normally receive a server IP address or hostname, a username, and a password. Keep those details private. The connection process is straightforward, but the buttons and client application differ by device.
Before you connect
Confirm that you have the correct server address, username, and current password. Check that the service status is active and that your own internet connection is stable. If the provider uses a nonstandard connection method, gateway, VPN, or allowlist, follow the service-specific instructions.
Do not paste credentials into random “RDP checker” websites or unofficial browser tools. Install a trusted client from Microsoft or your device's official application store.
Connect from Windows 11
1. Open Start and search for Remote Desktop Connection.
2. Open the application and enter the server IP address or hostname in the Computer field.
3. Select Connect.
4. Enter the supplied username and password.
5. Review the certificate prompt. Confirm that the server name matches the service you intended to reach before continuing.
6. Once the desktop loads, wait for Windows to finish any first-login preparation.
You can select Show Options before connecting to configure the username, display size, local resources, and connection experience. Avoid redirecting local drives or clipboard data unless the workflow needs them.
Connect from macOS
Install Microsoft's current Windows remote-access client from the Mac App Store. Add a new PC, enter the server address, and provide the assigned account when prompted. You can configure display resolution, full-screen behavior, clipboard access, audio, and folder redirection.
If a saved account stops working after a password reset, edit or remove the saved credential and enter the new password. macOS Keychain may otherwise continue offering an outdated value.
Connect from Android
Install Microsoft's supported Windows client from Google Play. Add a PC, enter the server address, and add the user account. On a phone, touch gestures replace mouse actions; a tablet, keyboard, and mouse usually provide a more comfortable working experience.
Mobile networks can change quality as you move. Save work frequently, and disconnect cleanly when the session is no longer required.
Connect from iPhone or iPad
Install Microsoft's supported Windows client from the App Store. Add the remote PC, enter the service address, and authenticate with the provided account. An iPad with a keyboard and trackpad can work well for administration, but verify application usability before relying on a mobile device for long sessions.
Understand disconnect, sign out, and shutdown
These actions are different:
- Disconnect closes the viewer while normally leaving your Windows session available to resume.
- Sign out closes applications in the session and ends that user session.
- Shutdown powers off the remote machine and may make it unreachable until it is started through the service control workflow.
- Restart reboots Windows and temporarily interrupts the connection.
Use shutdown only when you know how the server will be powered on again. For routine work, disconnecting is usually safer than shutting down.
Common RDP connection errors
The credentials did not work
Retype the username exactly. Some systems require Administrator, a local account format, or a domain-qualified username. Remove old saved credentials, make sure Caps Lock is off, and confirm that the password has not been reset.
The remote computer cannot be found
Check the address for spaces or typing mistakes. Test another network, confirm the service is active, and make sure a required VPN or gateway is connected. A server that was shut down will not accept a normal connection.
The session is slow or freezes
Test the latency and stability of your own connection. Close bandwidth-heavy downloads, use Ethernet where possible, reduce display resolution, disable unnecessary visual effects, and avoid redirecting unneeded devices. A closer server location may improve responsiveness.
A certificate warning appears
Do not ignore unexpected identity changes. Confirm the server address through your authenticated client area or support channel. If the information does not match, stop and ask for verification.
The screen is black after login
Wait briefly for first-login setup, then reconnect. If it continues, request a controlled reboot through the client service page rather than repeatedly forcing the connection. Persistent black screens can involve updates, profile issues, graphics settings, or a stalled session.
First-login security checklist
- Change the temporary server password if the service policy allows it.
- Use a long, unique password that is not used on any other account.
- Install pending security updates during an approved maintenance window.
- Create individual accounts instead of sharing one administrator login.
- Disable unused accounts and unnecessary device redirection.
- Keep a tested backup outside the server.
- Review the RDP security guide.
Microsoft maintains platform-specific Remote Desktop client guidance in its official Remote Desktop documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect without installing software on Windows?
Windows includes a traditional Remote Desktop Connection client. Microsoft also provides newer client experiences for supported platforms.
Why does the desktop stay open after I close the app?
Closing the viewer usually disconnects rather than signs out. That behavior helps long-running approved tasks continue, but you should still save work and follow application requirements.
